In step 3 all the value stories captured in step 2 are reduced to a manageable size. You switch from the divergent work method used in step 2, resulting in hundreds of value stories, to a convergent work method, reducing the value stories down to around 25. The technique used for this is called an affinity diagram. It uses the same principle as making a food stock. Boil it down and skim off the redundant content. For every layer in the diagram, the information should be more concentrated, but not changed. Every layer should keep the language of the customers. Don’t add, subtract, interpret or let your company language sneak into the value stories. Performed right you will end up with both overview and depth in your data.
